Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge is in-between Hilton Head Island and mainland :) South Carolina. The exit is in the middle of a long bridge spanning intercoastal waterways. It's about as off grid as you can get without actually getting too far off grid. The internet says the refuge is best experienced with a bike, but you need to bring it yourself. We had to walk. Lots of photos of the refuge featured alligators, so my sister was a little nervous about being away from civilization near potentially bitey reptiles.
